Biography

  • Irene is a partner at Munyao Muthama and Kashindi Advocates with over  15 years’ experience as a  practicing advocate. She previously was a partner at Hamilton Harrison & Mathews. She is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK)
  • She has a wealth of experience in commercial and civil litigation as well alternative dispute resolution. She has represented and advised a diverse portfolio of local and international clients in disputes filed before  all the courts in our legal system  including the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court as well as      key statutory tribunals and bodies.
  • She is renown as a leading and prolific labour law practitioner in Kenya. She heads MMK Advocates’ vibrant and active employment department which has increasingly been entrusted by clients to handle an array of complex, contentious and high value employment matters.
  • She  was appointed by the International Labour Organization in November 2023 as a Member of the Committee of Experts on Application of Conventions and Recommendations, by virtue of her well-known expertise. Irene employment law practice encompasses contentious and non- contentious labour law mandates and she handles several highly contentious and involving litigation as well as an array of non-contentious and advisory matters.
  • She handles all aspects of employment and labour law including but not limited to summary dismissals, constructive dismissals, redundancies, outsourcing, post-termination restrictions, discrimination, labour related constitutional matters, work injury compensation claims, employee benefits, review and drafting of contracts and policies, occupational and workplace safety and health laws among others.

  • Acted for Diani Reef Beach Resort & Spa, a five-star hotel situated in Diani along the Kenyan South Coast in successfully prosecuting appeals in the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court relating to claims made by over 70 former employees of a company from whom the client acquired the hotel.
